Highlights from a Year in North Canaan: Community News and Events

NORTH CANAAN — An action-packed year made for big news in North Canaan.

A terrier was rescued from a quarry, a new health center opened, and community members welcomed new businesses while saying farewell to an old favorite.

New Eateries and Initiatives

The year began with the opening of two downtown eateries: McMuckle’s Market and the reopening of Nutrition on Railroad under new ownership. This change filled a vital gap in the community’s dining options.

New Faces at Town Hall

In March, Town Hall introduced Paul Mattingly as the new executive assistant. Mattingly and First Selectman Brian Ohler implemented initiatives to streamline municipal operations. A particularly notable effort was ‘Make It Happen Monday,’ where all permitting officials were available in Town Hall to facilitate applications.

Community Rescue Efforts

This spring, a rescue operation saved Rippy the terrier from a quarry. Local animal control, fire departments, a regional ropes rescue team, and the first selectman joined forces, employing an infrared detection drone for a two-day saga.

Health Initiatives

May saw the grand opening of the Community Health and Wellness Center in North Canaan. CEO Joanne Borduas emphasized the center’s importance by stating, ‘We welcome everyone through the door without stigma and without discrimination. And for that, we are so grateful.’

Aviation for Youth

Youth took to the skies at Triumph Airfield with the support of the Experimental Aircraft Association. A total of 32 beginners experienced the joy of flight under the guidance of certified pilots.

Railroad Days Celebration

July featured Railroad Days, led by the North Canaan Events Committee. The festivities spanned two weeks and culminated in a parade, alongside a brilliant fireworks and drone display.

Artistic Contributions

The Transfer Station received a vibrant update thanks to local artist Cheri Johnson, who created a 40-foot mural promoting recycling and welcoming visitors.

Legal Troubles and Business Changes

In September, the Attorney General’s office released findings regarding Town Clerk Jean Jacquier, concluding misconduct in three incidents but no punitive measures. Jacquier is currently suing the town for legal expenses related to the investigation.

Meanwhile, Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) maximized syringes production at its local plant, responding to quality control issues from overseas. Director Fallon McLoughlin noted, ‘We’ve added over 100 full-time associates in the last year, and we currently have more than 500 full-time associates and nearly 50 contingent associates.’

The recent elections highlighted a variety of political choices in North Canaan, notably with voters selecting Trump for president and Murphy for the Senate, among others.

Farewell to a Local Favorite

As 2024 concluded, the community bid adieu to Great Falls Brewing Company, a long-standing establishment that shut down after prolonged slow periods exacerbated by the pandemic.
