Recognition for Commitment to Employee Health
Chelsea, MI – The Chelsea Senior Center (CSC) has been awarded a Bronze Award by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) in recognition of its concerted effort to enhance workplace wellness. This award was made possible by the 5 Healthy Towns Working Well Initiative, which inspired CSC to launch its innovative wellness program.
About the Initiative
Established in 2024, the program’s primary objective is to cultivate a healthier work culture by encouraging team members to adopt healthier habits. This initiative has seen significant engagement among staff, spearheaded by Katie Garvey, who serves as the Working Well Ambassador and the Respite Care Coordinator for CSC.
Staff Engagement Activities
To tailor the program effectively, Garvey conducted a survey to gauge the health interests and needs of CSC staff. The survey led to a February hydration challenge aimed at increasing water intake among team members. Additionally, the center organized a team potluck in July where staff enjoyed fresh salads and healthy dressings, fostering community spirit.
“I had not played badminton since I was a young kid,” said Jan Scarbrough, CSC’s Bookkeeper, recalling the enjoyable activity following their potluck.
Future Initiatives
Garvey states, “Our wellness initiative is designed to encourage team members to establish new routines or take a fresh approach to create new healthy habits.” Plans for the future include mental health training sessions in collaboration with Chelsea Hospital Community Health.
Acknowledging Other Award Winners
CSC is in esteemed company with its recognition, joining organizations like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the University of Michigan, all of which have implemented beneficial wellness initiatives in 2024.
