Maintaining good health and wellness is essential at any stage of life, and for individuals aged 50 and above, it becomes increasingly important to focus on staying active and engaged. The Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD) offers a wide range of health, fitness, and wellness programs aimed at promoting physical fitness and overall well-being. Whether you are looking to enhance flexibility, boost energy levels, or improve vitality, JCPRD has something to cater to everyone. Start your journey to a healthier, more vibrant lifestyle today!

Walking and Talking Programs

One of the simplest yet most effective routes to enhancing fitness is through JCPRD’s Walking and Talking program. Walking regularly helps improve cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate and enhancing circulation, making it accessible for participants of all fitness levels. Beyond boosting heart health, walking helps to strengthen muscles, improve bone health, and enhance mental well-being. Participants are welcome to walk at no cost Monday through Friday at the Okun Fieldhouse in Shawnee from 8 to 10 a.m. or at the New Century Fieldhouse in Gardner from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fitness Classes: Ageless Lifters

JCPRD’s Ageless Lifters program is returning to the Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse with refreshed offerings. This program focuses on providing participants with a full-body workout to strengthen and tone all major muscle groups. Utilizing dumbbells and bodyweight exercises, this non-cardio class is suitable for all fitness levels. Recreation Coordinator Maddie Becker shares, ‘Ageless Lifters is a great way to build strength and boost endurance. You will leave each session feeling stronger and more energized.’ The program includes six 50-minute sessions with a fee of $51 for residents and $56 for nonresidents, starting January 8 and February 19.

Zumba® Gold for Enjoyable Exercise

If you’re seeking a fun yet effective workout, Zumba® Gold offers a low-impact exercise experience designed for older adults or anyone seeking a gentler exercise option. This program modifies traditional Zumba to enhance accessibility for participants of various fitness levels. Enrollment is available for a five-week class starting January 4, February 15, or March 29, with a class fee of $40 for residents and $44 for nonresidents.

Walk With Ease Program

JCPRD is also reintroducing the Walk With Ease (WWE) program designed to enhance physical and mental health. Launching February 4 at New Century Fieldhouse and March 25 at Roeland Park Community Center, WWE features health education, stretching, strengthening exercises, and motivational strategies. According to Roeland Park Community Center Recreation Coordinator Melissa Bribiesca, ‘Walk With Ease will help reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis, increase balance and strength while improving your overall health.’ The cost for this 12-week program is $18 for residents and $20 for nonresidents, welcoming participants of all experience levels.

Engaging Soccer Alternatives: Walking Soccer

For the soccer enthusiasts, JCPRD is introducing Walking Soccer, a fun, low-impact activity fostering fitness and team spirit for all ages. Participants interested in this program can register for a free introductory class at New Century Fieldhouse on March 21.
