Thirty minutes after giving birth to her daughter, Ariel Freeman sat with her mother, enjoying a sandwich and laughter. Suddenly, she felt a ‘sudden gush of blood that soaked through the pad beneath her.’ Concerned, she called for a nurse who reassured her that postpartum bleeding was normal.

After yet another gush of blood 20 minutes later, Freeman felt ‘woozy.’ She informed the nurses again, who dismissed her worries. This experience highlights the serious issues surrounding postpartum care, particularly for Black women, who statistically experience higher rates of complications and maternal mortality.
