Airports Department Takes Action Against Incomplete Terminal Construction

\n

The Airports Department of Thailand has taken decisive action regarding the construction of a new passenger terminal at Trang Airport by terminating its contract with Port and Marine Corporation (PAM). The department also seized a 53-million-baht guarantee due to the project’s incompletion.

\n

According to Danai Ruangsorn, the Airports Department’s director-general, the directive to end the contract came from Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri. He emphasised the need to find a new contractor promptly to ensure the terminal’s completion, aimed for March.

\n

On November 8, approval for the contract termination was granted, and PAM was formally notified. The department instructed the bank responsible for the security guarantee to transfer the funds to address the ongoing issues.

Challenges Faced by the Project

\n

After the original contractor left the project unfinished, several problems have arisen, including rain leaks that damaged the terminal’s ceiling. Images of these damages have circulated widely on social media, prompting concerns about both safety and security.

\n

Danai noted that security issues have also come to light, with thieves reportedly stealing power cables from the site. To mitigate these concerns, five security guards have been hired to monitor the area around the clock.

\n

The department is proactive in resolving these issues. A committee was established on November 21 to assess the damages, evaluate the remaining work, and estimate the necessary funds for a new contractor to complete the project. This committee has 45 days to report back, after which a new contractor will be sought.

Future Commitments

\n

Despite the setbacks, Danai reiterated the department’s commitment to finalising the terminal by March 2025 to support tourism growth and enhance airport facilities in the region.

This initiative highlights the Airports Department’s dedication to ensuring safe and secure travel experiences while fostering the development of essential infrastructure in Thailand.
