This study observed 22,495 participants and concluded that biological aging might be a more accurate representation of health than chronological age alone. In essence, if you are 30 but consume a significant amount of junk food, your cells could be behaving as if they are 40 or older.
Study Insights
The researchers asserted, ‘A diet rich in ultra-processed food was associated with an acceleration of biological aging in a large sample of Italian adults.’ Clinical dietitian Shalini Garwin Bliss elaborates on the detrimental effects of ultra-processed foods, stating that they can promote the formation of free radicals, which damage vital molecules like DNA and proteins leading to premature cell death.

High levels of sugar and unhealthy fats associated with these foods are linked to increased risks of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and obesity. Furthermore, the low fiber content can disrupt gut health, leading to inefficient nutrient absorption.
