Libraries Across the U.S. Offer Free Health and Wellness Classes

MILWAUKEE (AP) — In recent efforts to enhance community health and wellness, libraries across the United States are offering free health programs. Notably, the Aurora Health Care Mobile Medical Clinic team engaged directly with patrons at the Milwaukee Public Library, equipped with essential tools to answer health-related questions.

On a Tuesday afternoon, a patron approached nurse practitioner Carolyn McCarthy for advice about his joints. She provided detailed guidance on the importance of his prescribed calcium channel blocker medication, explaining its role in maintaining bone health.

McCarthy remarked, ‘Hopefully, he walked away a little bit more informed.’

This interaction exemplifies one of the many initiatives libraries are adopting, ranging from fitness classes to mental health resources. Libraries are increasingly being recognized as essential public health spaces.

Jaime Placht, a health and well-being specialist from the Kansas City Public Library, stated, ‘The library is a public health space.’ Kansas City has implemented the American Heart Association’s Libraries with Heart program, allowing patrons access to blood pressure checks and take-home kits.

In Jarrell, Texas, where public health offices are absent, the local nonprofit library connects residents with mental health resources. Library director Susan Gregurek shared, ‘This is mental health, but it’s obviously larger than mental health.’

Moreover, Smithville Public Library utilizes surplus food from local farms to combat isolation among community members, demonstrating the comprehensive approach libraries are taking.

As such programs continue to thrive, the Milwaukee mobile health clinic averages eight patrons per visit, impacting lives by encouraging individuals to seek necessary medical attention.

In conclusion, is your local library contributing to community health? If not, perhaps it’s time to suggest some health-centered initiatives! By leveraging their trusted status, libraries are becoming indispensable partners in fostering healthier communities.
