TOPEKA, Kan. — Federal health officials are urging consumers in Missouri and Kansas to check their kitchens as cucumbers distributed to more than 25 states may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported this recall on Thursday, impacting cucumbers distributed by SunFed Produce, LLC, based in Arizona. The recall includes all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard boxes.

Health Risks Associated with Salmonella

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that salmonella can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. In rare cases, it can lead to severe health issues, including infections in the bloodstream or meningitis.

The recall covers cucumbers sold between October 12 and November 26 under the SunFed label. States affected include:

The Response from SunFed Produce

SunFed initiated the recall after the FDA linked their cucumbers to several reports of salmonellosis between October 12 and November 15. Consumers who have purchased these cucumbers are advised to avoid contact with them and to thoroughly clean surfaces that may have been contaminated. Customers are encouraged to dispose of or return the cucumbers to the point of purchase.

‘As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers,’ said Craig Slate, president of SunFed. ‘Food safety and consumer health are our top priorities, and we work closely with authorities to determine the issue’s cause.’
