The Importance of Mental Health Support During the Holidays
The holiday season can evoke a range of emotions, from joy and celebration to sadness and anxiety. While many people look forward to family gatherings and holiday festivities, it can also be a challenging time for those dealing with loss, addiction, or mental health struggles.
A recent survey by the National Alliance on Mental Illness revealed that 64% of individuals experiencing mental health issues found their conditions worsened during this time. As such, mental health professionals are stepping forward to remind everyone that they are available year-round to assist those in need.
Personal Stories of Recovery
Maxx Dempsey, who battled addiction while facing mental health challenges, shared their story of overcoming difficulties during the holidays. “I wasn’t around family. The holiday season was hard for me then,” they reflected. However, Dempsey recently celebrated a milestone in recovery, reuniting with their sister this Thanksgiving, stating, “I’m happy to say that we’ve been reconnecting. My family didn’t really understand what was going on, so that was difficult too.”
Being Supportive to Others
Experts emphasize the importance of being supportive friends or family members during this festive period. Jennifer Whitfield, Chief Program Officer at South Light Health, highlighted, “For those who are struggling, possibly with addiction or mental health challenges, seeing others happy during the holiday activities can be a real struggle. We must check in on our friends and loved ones without putting pressure on them to be cheerful.”
“Do not minimize or invalidate their feelings; instead, provide a supportive and listening ear,” Whitfield encouraged.
Available Resources for Holiday Support
For those in need of assistance, South Light Health recommends the following resources:
- 988 Lifeline
- NAMI Wake
- Recovery Communities of North Carolina (RCNC)

This holiday season, remember to reach out for support if you or someone you know is struggling. As we create cherished memories, it’s crucial to ensure that everyone feels included and supported.
