Investigation into Health Scheme Expenses
In response to the recent protests regarding the tragic rape-murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an inquiry into the surge of expenses under the Swasthya Sathi health scheme.

During a session in the Assembly on Thursday, Banerjee stated, “There was a noticeable increase in the expenditures related to the Swasthya Sathi scheme during the protests at RG Kar. We are conducting a thorough investigation to identify and penalize those involved in misuse of funds.”
Details of the Swasthya Sathi Scheme
The Swasthya Sathi scheme is a health insurance initiative by the West Bengal government providing coverage for secondary and tertiary care up to Rs 5 lakh per annum for each family. Reports indicated a significant increase in the use of this scheme during the protests, leading to concerns over financial management.
Assembly Discussion
Addressing inquiries from TMC MLA Samir Jana about potential overspending, Banerjee confirmed, “We invested considerable amounts during that period. However, given the sensitive nature of the RG Kar issue, which is currently subjudice, we can’t disclose further details. However, we are diligently verifying expenditures and will hold accountable those who misused public funds.”
Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya, reinforced the financial commitments of the scheme, unveiling that Rs 2,684 crore was allocated in the current financial year alone, benefiting over 2 million families. She added that the cumulative beneficiaries have reached approximately 8 million as of October 31, with a total spend exceeding Rs 10,719 crore.
Addressing Online Fraud
Additionally, Chief Minister Banerjee expressed concern regarding a fraudulent scheme involving student tablets, emphasizing that efforts are underway to capture the main suspects involved in siphoning off allocated funds. “We have already apprehended several participants, and the pursuit for the masterminds continues. We assure robust action against those involved,” she added.
“The strong rise in expenses suggests a possible connection to the protests, and we are determined to investigate thoroughly to ensure accountability,” said Chief Minister Banerjee.
