A New Era in Public Health Education
The University of Cincinnati has recently expanded its public health offerings by adding four new undergraduate concentrations within its Bachelor of Science in Public Health program. These concentrations include Global Health, Health Administration, Health Promotion and Education, and Urban Systems Design.
Interdisciplinary Approach
The program, housed within the College of Medicine, is unique as it draws instructors from nine colleges across UC’s main campus as well as two regional campuses. With approximately 180 students currently enrolled, including around 25 focusing specifically on public health concentrations, the program aims to cultivate diverse interests and skill sets.
Flexibility in Learning
All concentrations, except Urban Systems Design, are available both in-person and online. The online format is asynchronous, allowing students to navigate their studies at convenient times. For instance, the Global Health concentration consists of six targeted courses that can typically be completed within two years.
“We need to have a system that nurtures students’ ability to grow and change and find their niche during their four years of undergraduate education,” said Dr. Anil Menon, associate dean for undergraduate education.
Student Feedback and Opportunities
Feedback regarding the new concentrations has been overwhelmingly positive. Dr. Priyanka Gudsoorkar, director of the global health concentration, noted, “The students are very enthusiastic about these new offerings,” which seem particularly relevant for both international and transfer students.
Global Perspectives
The global health emphasis is particularly noteworthy as it is rare among U.S. universities. “These concentrations are innovative for UC,” remarked Dr. Regan Johnson, director of the undergraduate public health program.
Diverse Student Body
The program attracts a mix of traditional and non-traditional students, with many balancing full-time jobs. Dr. Johnson added, “These courses focus on hands-on experiences rather than just textbook reading.” Several study abroad opportunities are planned, with trips to Lisbon, Cuba, Ghana, and Tanzania scheduled, allowing students to explore global health challenges directly.
Career Aspirations
Graduates of the program can pursue positions at public health departments, non-profits, and government agencies, or continue their education in Master of Public Health or Doctor of Medicine programs.
Expanding Educational Offerings
The College of Medicine is also home to multiple undergraduate certificate programs, providing additional pathways for students to enhance their educational credentials. Dr. Menon emphasized, “These certificates are like micro-credentials for students, setting them up for long-term success.”
