Leading U.S. medical officials are once again warning about social media’s contributions to anxiety and depression. This is particularly concerning for a state like Colorado that has ranked as one of the lowest for mental wellness. The YMCA of Metro Denver is leading the charge by offering a variety of programs aimed at enhancing mental health through holistic and community-centered approaches.
Gong Bath Opportunities
One particularly unique and effective mental wellness option is a gong bath, a form of sound therapy that immerses participants in soothing vibrations. Gregg Wilkins, a seasoned gong bath instructor, has seen firsthand the profound impact gong baths can have. “The smallest group we’ve had was 55, and one time we had up to 100. It’s a beautiful thing to do, and I am really glad to be able to share with others,” Gregg explained.
Rachel Saunders, a YMCA member and past Gong Bath participant, described her experience as incredibly peaceful. “I just felt so relaxed. I don’t do a lot of meditation. My mind usually just races. Towards the end, I felt like I could totally relax and just experience the sound,” she said.
Yoga Workshops for Mental Wellness
Yoga is another key way to boost mental health, and one that YMCA members benefit from regularly. Jasmine Simons, a dedicated yoga instructor at the YMCA, believes that mental well-being is crucial for overall health. “Our mental well-being contributes to our longevity and affects every area of our lives,” she explained. Jasmine’s classes are designed to foster a sense of community and belonging, crucial elements for combating loneliness and isolation.
Sandra Kline, who has been teaching yoga at the Y for 15 years, has also seen how helpful yoga is physically for absolutely every body type and life stage, and how it can sustain and even improve mental capacity and wellbeing. “Yoga is good for the lifespan of any individual, whatever their circumstances,” she explained.
A Holistic Approach to Health
In addition to gong baths and general yoga classes, the YMCA offers a range of additional offerings targeted at mental wellness, including its Healthy Mindset Workshop, Ageless Fitness Yoga, Health Coaching and the Mindful Eating Series. These programs provide Coloradoans of all ages with tools to manage stress, improve mental clarity and foster a sense of community and belonging.
The YMCA of Metro Denver’s approach ensures that members have access to the resources and support they need to lead healthier, happier lives. As social media continues to impact mental health negatively, organizations like the YMCA provide a crucial counterbalance, offering meaningful real-life connections and activities that enhance mental wellness.
The YMCA of Metro Denver has been building strong, thriving and equitable communities since 1875, providing a wide variety of programs and resources for all Denverites. Read more about the YMCA’s yoga, gong bath, summer camp and other offerings at denverymca.org.
