Soldiers Showcase the Eagle Mindset

CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait – The 101st Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) team hosted its March Madness Challenge on March 19, 2025, aimed at developing the ‘Eagle Mindset’ and promoting readiness among Soldiers. This engaging event revolved around the essential five domains of H2F and provided a platform for Soldiers to learn more about the various wellness programs available.

The challenge kicked off with a body squat competition led by H2F Clinicians, where Soldiers were tasked with achieving greater repetitions in each round, increasing the intensity to test their limits. Soldiers participated in a series of interactive questions regarding mental, sleep, and nutritional readiness, enhancing their understanding of these crucial aspects.

Education Meets Competition

A two-person plank challenge and a question-and-answer session concluded the event, culminating in the announcement of a champion. Capt. Angela McCalla, an occupational therapist with the 101 CAB H2F team, stated, ‘We wanted to host an event to further educate Soldiers on the mission of H2F and increase their knowledge of the resources available to them while making it enjoyable.’

Many attendees were surprised to learn that just 30 minutes of moderate exercise could boost energy levels by three hours, though McCalla emphasized the necessity of proper rest to achieve these benefits. ‘Sleep is extremely important,’ she noted. ‘It is foundational for Soldier wellness and crucial for optimal functioning.’

Spiritual Resiliency and Mental Toughness

Maj. Michael Dawson, the brigade’s Chaplain, emphasized the interconnectedness of H2F’s five domains, suggesting that adopting the ‘Eagle Mindset,’ a philosophy coined by Maj. Gen. Brett Sylvia, could help Soldiers overcome mental challenges. He described this mindset as one that encourages Soldiers to channel their inner strength and resilience despite hardships.

The primary aim of the Eagle Mindset is to enhance Soldiers’ mental toughness and spiritual core, introducing them to FM 7-22 concepts, and encouraging personal growth within an environment that promotes open dialogue.

Commitment to Soldier Wellness

Command Sgt. Maj. Marcus R. Pitts championed the importance of holistic health, stating, ‘When our Soldiers take care of their physical, spiritual, and mental well-being, they are better equipped to prioritize the mission.’ This holistic approach ultimately ensures the success of military operations and the safety of team members.

Challenge participant, Spc. Ibrahim Farhat, shared his thoughts on the experience, highlighting the fun and camaraderie it fostered among the Soldiers. ‘I thought it was a good way to build camaraderie between Soldiers and companies,’ he stated.

Overall, the event successfully educated Soldiers on leveraging the H2F program to enhance their readiness. McCalla concluded, ‘Anytime we engage Soldiers and provide education, fun, and healthy competition, it’s a success.’
