A Celebration of Longevity and Strength
BAY SHORE, Long Island — A woman from Long Island is celebrating her 100th birthday, and she has done so in a way that showcases more than just age—she displayed remarkable fitness that many people half her age would envy.
Impressive Feats of Fitness
Geraldine “Jerry” Leo, who turned 100 on April 11th, demonstrated her extraordinary stamina by completing a five-minute plank at the Great South Bay YMCA, where she has been a member since its opening in 1991, thanks to encouragement from her late husband, Dominick.
As her aerobics class typically wraps up at two minutes, Leo surprisingly held on for a full three minutes before pushing herself further, displaying her strength, pristine hearing, and coordination.
Inspiring Words from a Fitness Pioneer
‘She’s a strong woman,’ said Despina Tenedorio, Health and Wellness Director at the Great South Bay YMCA, highlighting her resilience and fitness prowess.
Fitness instructor Elizabeth Grant remarked on Leo’s incredible performance, stating, ‘Her form is beautiful, and she can teach people how to do it the right way.’ Leo’s friend, Marion Saturno, added, ‘She definitely puts some of the class to shame, including me.’
Sharing Her Timeless Wisdom
During a feature with ABC New York affiliate WABC, Leo shared her secret to longevity: ‘Be consistent, be positive, and keep moving in whatever you do. That’s very important.’
This week, in honor of her birthday, not only is the YMCA celebrating her achievements, but the mayor of Babylon is also recognizing her inspiring lifestyle.
A True Inspiration for All Generations
Leo remains a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating that age is merely a number, and that maintaining an active lifestyle can significantly contribute to longevity and well-being.
